Maple Trails and Northern Tails: Canada Like You've Never Seen

Avery Merritt

"There are no limits to the majestic future which lies before the mighty expanse of Canada with is virile, aspiring, cultured, and generous-hearted people." - Winston Churchill

When you think of Canada, the second largest country by land area, you probably think of the popular destinations like Toronto, Vancouver, Edmonton or Ottawa. What most people don't realize is that Canada is renowned for its stunning landscapes and national parks like Banff and Jasper, along with attractions such as Niagara Falls, draws in visitors from all over the world. While these locations are popular (and for good reason), there is a unique allure in exploring destinations that often escape the mainstream travel spotlight. Join us as we explore the hidden gems of this vast and captivating country!

Our first stop on our journey is the Watson Lake Sign Post Forest in Waston Lake, Yukon. The "forest" was started in 1942 when a homesick United States Army G.I., who was working on the Alaska Highway Project, added a sign stating the miles and direction of his hometown. Others joined in and over the years it has grown immensely to include thousands of signs from all over the world.

Today, the Sign Post Forest sits along the Alaska highway in Watson Lake and draws in travelers from all over to wander the rows of signs and even add their own to commemorate their journey through this remote part of Canada. The Watson Lake Sign Post Forest stands as a whimsical and unique expression of the human spirit of exploration and our desire to leave a mark on the places we explore.

Heading southeast, we come across Muncho Lake, British Columbia. The landscape in BC is sure to take your breath away, but this stunning remote glacial lake, spanning 7.5 miles, is known for its crystal-clear turquoise waters. This picturesque lake is surrounded by dense forests and rugged mountains and is home to a variety of wildlife. Depending on the time of year that you visit, you could see black or grizzly bears, moose, bald eagles and even some mountain goats!

Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy fishing for Arctic Grayling, lake trout and whitefish, hiking or camping around the lake in the summer. Don't forget to come back in the winter to experience snowmobiling and other winter sports when the lake freezes. Keep in mind that with remote wilderness, you do give up some creature comforts like phone service.

If you want to enjoy the beautiful landscape, but retreat for a warm shower and hot meal at the end of the day, you'll definitely want to book a room at the Northern Rockies Lodge. The pet friendly lodge is situated right on the lake and offers a variety of amenities, including watersport rentals and RV hookups. No matter how you choose to travel, put Muncho Lake at the top of your list!

Northern British Columbia is home to a natural hot spring in Liard River Hot Springs Provincial Park. Liard Hot Springs boasts two pools with varying temperatures. The larger pool, The Alpha Pool ranges from 107-125 degrees Fahrenheit, while the smaller pool, Beta Pool, ranges from 100-107 degrees Fahrenheit. The pools are located in lush boreal forest offering a tranquil place to relax. Do keep in mind that these secluded springs are located in a park that is home to a variety of wildlife including bears and moose, so be careful if you encounter them and never approach a wild animal.

Laird River Hot Springs Provincial Park does offer camping facilities and is open year round. The park and hot springs are both managed with a focus on preserving the natural beauty of British Columbia so that future generations may enjoy this pristine wilderness. If you are looking to camp in this luscious landscape, but don't know what kind of camping equipment would be best, take a look at our other blog post here to get you in the right direction.

Whether you're heading to the big city, Niagara Falls or into the vast wilderness of British Columbia, Canada is the perfect travel destination. This beautiful country truly has it all from mountains and great lakes, to tundra, forests and beyond!
